On 23rd November 1998 the first true commercial
Cable Dome in the UK was erected at
Walton-on-Thames. This was 32m x 34m covering two
tennis courts. Many Cable Domes have been
erected in Europe with some up as long as eighteen
years.
This replaced a conventional single skin Air Dome
that the club had been using for fifteen years. The
players were amazed that the Cable Dome was so much
lighter inside than their original dome and the
profile gave them more space. They only have
planning consent for the dome to be up for six
months during the winter, so it is taken down and
rolled into a storage area attached to the fan
housing.
